Knowing how to get what you want in your relationship is an important part of enjoying yourself and making sure your needs are met. Unfortunately many people do not know exactly how to get what they want because they think their partner should just know how to please them, or they feel selfish asking for things that they want. When you realize your partner cannot read your mind and asking for what you want is not selfish if you are also giving the other person what they want, then it makes is easier to begin to figure out how to get what you want.
Get What You Want by Asking for It
As simple as that might sound, knowing how to get what you want by asking for it is one area that many people in relationships seem to struggle with. A surprising number of people feel that if their partner is truly “right” for them, that they will just automatically know what is wanted. That could not be further from the truth. No one can possibly know what you want if you do not know how to ask for what you want. Be polite and clear and ask for whatever it is that you think you want, in order to get what you want.
Get What You Want by Being Specific
Where many partnerships fail to give each person what he or she wants is because wants are asked for in general terms which are impossible to fulfill. For example, you tell your partner that you want the two of you to spend more time together. That is broad and does not give your partner anything concrete to know how you need to see that time together even if they really want to give it to you so you can get what you want. Instead, ask for what you want by being specific. Telling your partner “I would like for us to have one date night, alone together, once a week” will let them know exactly what you want.
Get What You Want by Giving Your Partner What They Want
In order to get what you want, ask your partner what they want and make every attempt to give it to him or her. When your partner feels like you are giving them what he or she wants, then the willingness will be there to give you what you want as well.
